At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
